Our Attorneys
Michelle May O’Neil strives to provide clients with high-quality representation in a personalized atmosphere. She has over 20 years of experience representing men, women, and children related to family law matters such as divorce, child custody, and complex property division. Described by one lawyer as “a lethal combination of sweet-and-salty”, Ms. O’Neil exudes genuine compassion for her client’s difficulties, yet she can be relentless when in pursuit of a client’s goals.
One judge said of Ms. O’Neil, “She cannot be out-gunned, out-briefed, or out-lawyered!” Ms. O’Neil became a certified family law specialist by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1997 and has maintained her certification since that time. Representing clients in litigation before the trial court is an important part of her practice; also, family law appellate matters are a unique niche of Ms. O’Neil’s practice. Lawyers frequently consult with Ms. O’Neil on their litigation cases about specialized legal issues requiring particularized attention both at the trial court and appellate levels.
Ms. O’Neil has been named to the list of Texas SuperLawyers in 2011, 2012, and 2013, a peer-voted honor given to only about 5% of the lawyers in the state of Texas. She has also been recognized with an “A-V” peer review rating by Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directories for the highest quality legal ability and ethical standards, and her professionalism was further recognized when she was nominated for membership in the Annette Stewart Inn of Court, an organization devoted to the professionalism of the practice of law.
A noted author, Ms. O’Neil released her second book Basics of Texas Divorce Law in November 2010. Her first book, All About Texas Law and Kids, was published in September 2009 by Texas Lawyer Press. In 2012, Ms. O’Neil co-authored the booklets What You Need To Know About Common Law Marriage In Texas and Social Study Evaluations. The State Bar of Texas and other providers of continuing education for attorneys frequently enlist Ms. O’Neil to provide instruction to attorneys on topics of her expertise in the family law arena.

Karri Bertrand’s approach to family law embraces both the role of protector and champion, a philosophy which stems from growing up the oldest child of 13. Her passion for family law was ignited when she witnessed a close friend’s traumatizing divorce, which then fueled her through 8 years of night school to finish her undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Karri brings a unique foundation to the practice of law, having been a certified paralegal for 15 years prior to obtaining her law degree. This experience provided her with many hands-on opportunities, including trials, depositions, and mediations, as well as knowledge in handling complex legal matters reserved for more senior attorneys. Further, she assisted renowned family law appellate attorney Michelle O’Neil in her preparation and presentation of an oral argument before the Supreme Court of Texas.
As a law student, Karri received training in advocacy both in the classroom and representing clients at UNT Dallas College of Law’s Community Lawyering Center (CLC), where her achievements earned her special recognition. Because of her diverse experience and background, Karri has the unique ability to analyze family law from every angle – from client to paralegal to lawyer.
Karri graduated summa cum laude with Major Honors from the University of Texas at Dallas with a B.A. in Literary Studies. While an undergraduate, she was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Golden Key Honor Society, and on the Dean’s List. At the University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law, Karri received many accolades, including appointment to the Accessible Law law review, multiple appearances on the Dean’s List, the CALI Awards for the highest grade in contracts and trial practice, and a Dean’s scholarship. Additionally, she was an inaugural appointee to the Board of Advocates for demonstrating strong advocacy skills in performance-based coursework.
